On February 19, 2014 the research consortium refie and GIZ invited to a stakeholder workshop in Lilongwe. Under the overall question “How can research contribute to design an inclusive education system in Malawi?” experiences, lessons-learnt and practices were share between representatives of civil society, academia, donor community and ministries. Lively discussions evolved around the current status of inclusive education in Malawi and expectations towards the refie research project. One main outcome was the need to apply a broad understanding of inclusion. This means not only focusing on the inclusion of persons with disabilities but according to the Salamanca Statement take the educational situation of the most disadvantaged and marginalized groups (e.g. girls, street and working children, disabled children, children from linguistic, ethnic or cultural minorities, children from remote or nomadic populations, children affected by HIV/Aids) into account.
